Pastor Chuck Johnstone has been a United Methodist pastor since 1988. Tracy First is his sixth congregational appointment since he became Associate Pastor at Asbury UMC in Livermore. He grew up in San Jose, after moving from Minnesota as a young boy, and attended the Nazarene Church. He attended Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho where he received his BA in History/Pre-Law in 1977. After being called to ministry while attending The University of Idaho School of Law, Pastor Chuck went to and graduated with a Masters of Divinity degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1982 with a double major in Church History and Theology. After a short ministry in a Nazarene Church he undertook a Doctoral Program in Berkeley at The Graduate Theological Union. During those years he met his wife, Lou, and they had twin daughters, Stacy and Kimberly – which became priorities over pursuing a PhD. Chuck and Lou joined Los Altos UMC in 1985 and Chuck went on staff there in 1986 working as a Pastoral Assistant. In addition to interim and shorter appointments Pastor Chuck served Castro Valley UMC for 10 years and Asbury UMC, a second time as Senior/Co-Pastor, for 11 years. Chuck and Lou have two granddaughters – Fay and Oona – with a grandson due in late April 2019. Chuck enjoys reading, movies, stamp collecting, travel, time with family and friends. His involvement in ministry beyond the local church has included chairing the Conference Commission on Archives and History, Chairing a District Committee on Ordained Ministry, Chairing the Conference Committee on Personnel and Chairing the Residents in Ministry Committee for the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry.
